Kinja'd!!!

Nice high-ish resolution press photos; objectionable subject.

Kinja'd!!!

I mean, seriously...these are significantly nicer photos than I would expect for an economy car from the ‘80s.

Kinja'd!!!

Wagon Wednesday material, right here.

Family photo

Now, for a pop-quiz (yes, I know)... of the four body styles in this picture, one was discontinued, one was redesigned, and two carried on with only a few new body panels for the second generation... which was which...

fhrblig wins!

Give me one of those hatchbacks. I’d love to stuff a Supercharged Ecotec or a built to the gills 60* V6 in one.

Honestly, I’d be happy with a second generation Z24 with the stock LB6 2.8l V6 and a stick.

Kinja'd!!!

My aunt had one in blue with the silver body kit (though her’s had the 3-speed auto). I thought it was quite neat when I was younger for some reason. Maybe it was the wheels...

The Z24s sounded great, too, a large portion of that probably having to do with the cowl-induction hood and unique intake setup.

I could get on board with that. With a manual. I prefer the mini Fox body look of the 1g cars but with the right equipment?

I’m a bit weird though. I defend the well optioned J body.

WOW... I had the First Gen Coupe.... my memory of it, is a lot better than it looks in those pictures. Had to google some pictures of the various generations to make sure I did not have a second Gen.... Nope, as I thought I had a first gen, and those picture look worse than my memory of it... which is not saying a whole lot.

Keep Oppo Cavalier.

These were just as common as the Chevy was in America back in its time.

These look so crisp and clean compared to modern cars. Sure they might not have always been assembled with immaculate care, or made from world-beating materials, but they don’t look too bad now. I assume these pics are of very early 1982-83 cars. Those “star” wheels shown on a couple cars are interesting, don’t think I have ever seen one in real life.

When I was a little kid, back around 1983, a friend’s mother had a white Cavalier “Type 10" fastback hatch. I thought it was a pretty cool car, as it had a sunroof.

There’s a first generation convertible that has been showing up to the local car shows the past few years. It’s nice, but it’s no coupe. I did see a very clean coupe at a show a few years ago, but I can’t seem to find the picture at the moment.

I’ve been finding myself admiring cars from the ‘80s and ‘90s more recently, both those that were “good” and “not so good”. Maybe it’s nostalgia talking, but I think most of those designs hold up a fair bit better than a lot of the designs from the last ~10 years. I actually find them refreshing to look at.

My aunt had an ‘89 Z24, which I thought was pretty neat (mostly due to the wheels).

It’s the relatively clean design. No huge light clusters, no swaths of bodyside creases that try to make workaday cars look exciting, no leering headlights, etc. It ages better. In some ways, modern design is following the ideal of 1958-60 or so - pile on as much “styling” as you can.

I vividly remember those “checkerboard” wheels. Those cars were relatively common in high school parking lots here when I was a student in the mid 90s.
